Name / Organization:
UNIVERSITY OF THESSALY (UTh)
Role in the infrastructure:
Coordinator
DESCRIPTION:

The Inspired-Thessaly hub is composed by the Laboratory of Structural and Functional Biochemistry (SFBL) of the Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology and the Laboratory of Biochemistry of the Department of Veterinary Medicine (LBVM) of University of Thessaly. SFLB activities are directed to research on structural and functional aspects of macromolecules of pharmaceutical and biotechnological interest and structure-based drug design. The main directions of the SFBL activities is the rational design, synthesis, and evaluation of molecules against major diseases with a current emphasis on type 2 diabetes, angiogenesis, cancer, and inflammation. In particular research in SFBL aims to elucidate the relationship between structure/function of enzymes involved in glycogen metabolism, ribonucleases of the pancreatic ribonuclease A superfamily, deadenylases, and mitochondrial steroid hormone receptors. LBVM research interests are focusing on protein chemistry, assay development, crystallography as tools for the discovery of inhibitor (drugs) in various therapeutic areas but mainly oncology. Target proteins include PCNA, CDK2, GSK3, Cyclin A, TNF, RANKL, and b-Raf. The LBVM has the expertise and the instruments for the following techniques fluorescence single cell and plate, fluorescence polarization, Isothermal titration calorimetry, Fast protein liquid chromatography, protein production, crystallization as well as structure determination.
